Top 9 Places to Consider for a Honeymoon Before You Say I Do

It goes without saying that crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, tropical cocktails and palm trees make up most of the photos featured on honeymoon related travel websites and brochures. Tropical islands are ideal destinations for honeymooners. But there is more to explore. Many are sunny and warm destinations throughout the year.

Trippy user, Ryan Webb asked:
Remote honeymoon destination that has plenty of sun in November?
We live in Austin. Willing to travel far to get to our destination but a shorter flight would be a plus.
Trip length is 8 -10 days.
Looking for somewhere remote and romantic. Ideally, the trip would provide a balance of relaxation (at hotel property) and exploration (of the area surrounding the resort or hotel).

Ryan received 22 suggestions from fellow Trippy users and here are the top 9 places for a honeymoon:

1. Sri Lanka

Nalin Mello suggested Sri Lanka, the tear-drop shaped island in the southeast of India in the Indian Ocean. Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is known for its wildlife (leopards and elephants), tea plantations, historic temples, old Portuguese and Dutch forts and hot curry dishes.

For those seeking sun and affordable accommodation, Sri Lanka has it too. Top beaches include Hikkaduwa Beach, Unawatuna Beach, Dickwella Beach, Mirissa Beach and Negombo Beach. Dickwella Beach is most suitable for honeymooners.

Nalin wrote:
I'd recommend the following,

Heritance Kandalama: This place is right at the heart of the cultural triangle. If you are into safari, this is the place to go. Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dambulla Cave Temple, and many other popular attractions are within close distance to the hotel.
The Ark: "In rural Sri Lanka, a ‘watch-hut’ is adopted as an elevated refuge for the farmer to protect the cultivation overnight. In retrospect ‘The Ark’ is a contemporary style elevated estate villa nestled on a raised terrain of a 40-acre estate in Mathugama, where the rubber plantation stops and the jungle begins. It’s unique and elevated sitting allows a breathtaking view of the estate, the valley below and hills beyond, leaving you in lush green seclusion."

2. Costa Rica

Jane Bertschinger responded:
For a short flight from Austin, how about Costa Rica? Rivers, jungles, and beaches. Experience the Arenal Volcano and relax in the hot springs. Head over to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, and keep your balance, as you go across on the aerial bridges above the rainforest. And you could end your trip by relaxing a few days at a beach resort sipping tropical drinks while listening to the monkeys nearby in the jungle.

Gary Smith echoed:
Costa Rica is our favorite place on the planet - so far. Consider Tamarindo Rainy season is Sept / Oct. November will be nice. We love to relax on the beach; many nice hotels - hike the national parks, kayak, ride horses - all nearby.

Sitting right on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Tamarindo blends the best of sand, surf, and a laid-back atmosphere. From November to April, the leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs on Grande Beach, a short distance from Tamarindo.

3. Brazil

Jill Siegel suggested:
I would suggest Trancoso, Brazil. It's perfect for a honeymoon. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world as well as amazing restaurant options and venues in the evening. Water sports such as kayaking, windsurf, kite surf, surfing, as well as eco-tourism, boating, and horseback riding on the beach. Trancoso also has a stunning golf course with stunning views of the ocean and beaches. I would combine Trancoso with a few nights in Rio de Janeiro and a night in Iguazú Falls for a perfect honeymoon.

I believe two or three nights in Iguazu Falls is more suitable for honeymooners. Take your time to enjoy Iguazu Falls and Parque das Aves – a bird park in Iguazu Falls. I suggest going across to Argentina to experience the Argentinian-side of Iguazu Falls. You’ll have a complete experience on both sides.

Trancoso is a quiet beach resort town, a two-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro. And Iguazu Falls requires the same amount of flight time from Rio too.

4. Spain

For those seeking sun and Old World charm in Europe, Spain has the best options. Spain has a rich history, delectable cuisine, late-night culture, warm beaches and modern conveniences. The options for dining is vast in Spain.

You'll be spoilt for choice in Spain. Head to the south to Costa del Sol if you want to spend time in Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast. There are art museums in Madrid and Barcelona, flamenco and history in Seville, and Moorish palaces in Granada. Island lovers may consider Majorca, one of Spain’s islands in the Mediterranean.

Spain has it all.

5. Arizona

Courtney C said:
Everyone thinks automatically thinks "beach" with a question involving "sun" "remote" and "romantic."
Might I suggest the desert in November? You won't have to fly far from Austin to make it Arizona. I know that Phoenix doesn't sound very remote, but since you're familiar with the wide open west, I'm sure you believe me that there are quiet, private, getaway places to be found in zip codes more notoriously associated with the city and busy.

Anyway, I recommend staying for 8-10 days at The Arizona Grand ResortThere's an award-winning spa on-site, golf course, a not-too-crowded but very over the top water park, fine dining and great poolside bars. Above all its luxury, luxury, luxury.

I would suggest a trip to Sedona to visit the Red Rock State Park.

6. Prague

A trippy user, Tomas Zaruba from Prague suggested his hometown. He said:
Prague is, in my opinion, one of the nicest cities in the world, so it is worth to see. We have many old buildings including Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Old Town Square, Vyšehrad and many other sights.

Tiffany Weber from Oregon and Gabriella M from the Netherlands agreed. Gabriella wrote:
I would recommend Prague- it is lovely, with pretty views, walkable distances, lots of culture and romantic things to do. Just rent a boat and enjoy the views pedaling or rowing on the river in the city center!

Prague may not be as warm as Sri Lanka, Spain or Costa Rica, but it offers rich history, medieval castles, romantic bridges and cheap beer. For lovers of history, culture, and architecture, Prague is paradise. It may not work for you if you’re not a city person.

7. The Dominican Republic

Celia Gordon Even loved the Dominican Republic:
We loved Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic in December. The city was busy and congested from the airport to the resort, but otherwise less chaotic at the resort. We stayed at the Hard Rock Cafe Punta Cana; my husband loved that all of the staff spoke English. We did some very awesome excursions set up through the hotel (tour of the banana plantation and cigar factory, ATVs through the jungle, horseback on the beach, and a party catamaran). There are also adults-only resorts in Punta Cana, but I am not sure of the other excursions that are offered.

On a modest budget, you indeed can have it all in the Dominican Republic for a honeymoon. The Dominican Republic is packed with lots of beautiful beaches, world-class golf courses, small and big towns, and coffee plantations in the mountains besides those already mentioned by Celia. Santo Domingo, the island’s capital city, is the oldest European settlement in the New World.

Besides Punta Cana, honeymooners may want to consider Puerto Plata in the northern coast.

8. Bora Bora

Terry Uemura from Hawaii recommendations includes Fiji, Cook Islands, and French Polynesian islands. She wrote:
Number one destination for honeymooners is Tahiti. The colors of the Lagoons of Bora Bora is like no other! The mountain peaks of Moorea are spectacular. Raiatea, Taha'a, and Huahine are less visited but still beautiful. The main island of Tahiti is the only island with a big city feel, but still has some beautiful places to explore.

If you’re wondering what there is to do on a small island like Bora Bora, you’ll find your answers when you read 5 Day Trips to Take in Bora Bora.

9. Goa India

Trippy user Arpit Gupta from Jaipur India suggested Goa. It’s located on the western shore of India along the Arabian Sea and only about an hour flight from Mumbai. Ruled by the Portuguese for 450 years, Goa is a city of west meets east. Unlike other parts of India, the Goan cuisine is influenced by Portuguese – heavy of seafood, and you can eat beef there too.

Avoid monsoon season from June to September. November would be ideal for Ryan. Resorts in Goa for couples include Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa, Zuri White Sands Resort, and Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa.
